The fruit of the prickly pear cactus is a delicious and locally abundant, naturally-occurring food and medicine. In this introductory class to working with prickly pear as food and medicine we’ll experience the ease of processing prickly pear fruit. Then we’ll create and sample some delicious prickly pear fruit drinks while we discuss the vast array of healing qualities possessed by the prickly pear cactus.

All participants will leave with a clear understanding of how to process prickly pear fruit for juice, at home, and a deeper appreciation for all the medicinal applications of prickly pear from first-aid to chronic complaints.

All participants should bring appropriate sun protection (although much of the class will take place in a shaded area), ample water to drink, and comfortable footwear for a short walk in the desert. A notebook and camera are suggested, but not required for this class.
