The Sonoran desert abounds with wild plant food!
Learn the seasons, learn the plants. This is the path of the forager. Spending time in nature is our best way to learn. Under the guidance of an experienced forager, one can dramatically increase their learning curve.
Moving from the wet monsoon season to the warm, dry autumn, a great many wild plant foods should be ripening. This is a great time for a number of wild plant foods including berries, nuts, seeds, roots and beans.
Our exact location will depend on the weather leading up to the date.
Join us for an exploration of these powerfully nutritious foods within the educational and healing environment of Mother Nature.
John Slattery
I arrived in the Sonoran Desert over 20 years ago at a time when very few were thinking of how to live off the desert in a harmonious way. I was called to walk the plant path and was solely married to this way of life for many years. I have since raised my daughter on wild plant foods and have shared this knowledge with 100s, if not 1,000s of people through my classes, apprenticeships, and books.
The act of foraging is easy. It’s the work that leads up to it, the discipline and restraint initially involved, that gives the forager the gift of insight and the confidence to do so gracefully, productively, and honorably.
Cocolmeca beans
Learn in great detail about the major and minor food plants of the Sonoran desert in the early summer. Turn this full day of hands-on learning into a lifetime investment for future knowledge gathering and wild food foraging!
wood sorrel greens
In this 7th session of the season, we’ll explore what the mid-autumn season has to offer us. Some possibilities include greens, yucca fruit, beans and seeds, or possibly an abundant berry harvest in the low desert. No matter what, it will be an adventure and an opportunity for great learning!
This workshop takes place in the field, near Phoenix, at about 1500-4000’ elevation.
We’ll start the day shortly after sunrise to get out when it’s still cool which greatly improves how our bodies adapt to the heat of the day and allows us to wrap up by 3p for a full day of foraging!
Full Registration for one individual for Saturday, Sep. 13, 2025
