The Sonoran desert abounds with wild plant food!

Learn the seasons, learn the plants. This is the path of the forager. Spending time in nature is our best way to learn. Under the guidance of an experienced forager, one can dramatically increase their learning curve.

As the days grow long and hot we enter into the dry summer of the Sonoran desert. This is a ripening time for a great number of wild foods including beans and cactus buds and fruits.

Closer to the water sources, delectable foods will be ripening as well.

Join us for an exploration of these powerfully nutritious foods within the educational and healing environment of Mother Nature.

John Slattery

I arrived in the Sonoran Desert over 20 years ago at a time when very few were thinking of how to live off the desert in a harmonious way. I was called to walk the plant path and was solely married to this way of life for many years. I have since raised my daughter on wild plant foods and have shared this knowledge with 100s, if not 1,000s of people through my classes, apprenticeships, and books.

The act of foraging is easy. It’s the work that leads up to it, the discipline and restraint initially involved, that gives the forager the gift of insight and the confidence to do so gracefully, productively, and honorably.

Learn in great detail about the major and minor food plants of the Sonoran desert in the early summer. Turn these 2 full days of hands-on learning into a lifetime investment for future knowledge gathering and wild food foraging!

In this 2nd class of the season, we’ll learn more about the desert bean trees as they come into flower or the beans begin to ripen.

We’ll also learn more about the cactus foods of the desert while having access to nearby riparian vegetation, including greens, roots and rhizomes, and more.

This weekend will prove to be information packed as we explore the upper Sonoran desert northeast of Phoenix at an elevation around 1500-2000’.

We will start each day at 6a to get out when it’s still cool which greatly improves how our bodies adapt to the heat of the day.
