The Sonoran desert abounds with wild plant food!

Learn the seasons, learn the plants. This is the path of the forager. Spending time in nature is our best way to learn. Under the guidance of an experienced forager, one can dramatically increase their learning curve.

As summer wears on and the rains have arrived in the Sonoran desert a new world emerges. The intense dry heat brings a great deal of food to full maturity, including the Emory oak acorn. This wild nut continues to fall from the tree into the late summer and early autumn, depending on the location.

Additionally, this is a phenomenal time for a great many wild foods at mid-elevation and higher.

This class features these mid-elevation plants at the height of summer moisture, so an abundance may await us!

Join us for this exploration of the powerfully nutritious wild foods within the educational and healing environment of Mother Nature.

John Slattery

I arrived in the Sonoran Desert over 20 years ago at a time when very few were thinking of how to live off the desert in a harmonious way. I was called to walk the plant path and was solely married to this way of life for many years. I have since raised my daughter on wild plant foods and have shared this knowledge with 100s, if not 1,000s of people through my classes, apprenticeships, and books.

The act of foraging is easy. It’s the work that leads up to it, the discipline and restraint initially involved, that gives the forager the gift of insight and the confidence to do so gracefully, productively, and honorably.

Learn in great detail about the major and minor food plants of the Sonoran desert in the early summer. Turn these 2 full days of hands-on learning into a lifetime investment for future knowledge gathering and wild food foraging!

Now mid-way through the Foraging course, we’ll climb up a bit out of the lower desert to experience the majestic Emory oaks (perhaps the namesake for the state of Arizona, in the Basque language) and their sublime acorns, edible right off the tree.

Further explorations through the canyons, across hillsides, and mid-elevation desert, we’ll find seasonings, fruits, unusual vegetables, seeds, and other treasures awaiting us.

This weekend will prove to be information packed as we explore the mid-elevation habitats of the Sonoran desert northeast of Phoenix at elevations between 2500-5000’.

We will start each day early to get out when it’s cool, wrapping up by mid-afternoon.

Camping options are available nearby for those interested in camping. Additional information will be provided upon registration.
